I had set a fairly easy goal some years ago to collect at least one pack from each year spanning 1970-1980. Along the way I obtained some rack packs and wax trays as well. Accomplishing this goal relatively quickly, I moved on to purchasing some full wax boxes of which I currently have just two, 1977 & 79. I've seen the box of '77s appreciate quite nicely, as I recall making the purchase several years ago for under $300, and most recent I've seen it priced upward near $800. I recall buying the '79 box for just under $200. Both are near pristine boxes & packs, too. What willpower it takes not to crack these puppies open! But, I know they are worth a whole lot more sealed, so I let the temptation take its course and pass. None of my packs or boxes are professionally graded however. What this will mean down the road for resale when I, or my kids (who will likely inherit my entire collection), are ready to put them on the market, remains to be seen. I am confident my stuff is sealed and unsearched, but alas have no real proof of that. In any event, for now I enjoy living vicariously through the brave souls who post their vintage wax busting on the tube for all to enjoy. It's pretty exciting watching them open the packs and the suspenseful sifting through cards one by one, never as of yet pulling a major star card that I have seen. This only re-confirms for me that it is by no means worth taking that risk--it's too much of a long shot. So why do so many of us put so much stock in unopened material? What is the appeal?? For me, its all about bringing myself back to my childhood days. Baseball cards that I still have from back then definately have this affect, but nothing brings you back like holding a vintage pack that has never been open. It's a miniature time capsule and as close to the fountain of youth as your gonna get! I started in 1976. 16 cards for 17 cents. Now several dollars. Then they were on the shelf. Now on the counter in protected containers. I never see kids buying baseball cards there now, only energy drinks.

Comment on I can still smell the gum…

Did the 1971 Baseball Jumbo Cellos that came in the mini box with the oval see through hole come with gum?

Perry
irecom@bellsouth.net

Comment on Pricing of Unopened Items

hi all,
i would like to weigh in on this if you dont mind. for me, the unopened pack is FAR more interesting to me than single cards. i am almost rabid when it comes to purchasing these. the simple scarcity of U-p's intrigues me. Sure a nice card i great but that same card that have never been touched is 1000 times rarer. i can remember opening boxes and boxes of cello/rack packs and not finding a star on front of one of them. Opening a 1977 cello box, for instance might get you a few nice cards. but for my money you can keep all those and give me one unopened pack with say... Nolan Ryan on the front. I get goose-pimples thinking about it. anyhoo, thats my 2cents, let me know what you all think

Comment on I can still smell the gum…

You really captured what it was like back in the early 70's to buy and flip baseball cards. I remember when I first moved into the new apartments on Rt. 59 in Spring Valley. This older kid schooled me on flipping and took my brand new pack of 1972 cards. I ended up with Curt Blefary 1971. Those were the good old days. I still have that card! Thanks for the great post.
